\THE J.M. KAPLAN FUND COMMON CAUSE

In May 2019, the Youth Design Center (YDC) collaborated with The J.M. Kaplan Fund to design the Social Justice Convening Report, encapsulating the essence of a two-day gathering of over 25 social justice grantees focused on criminal justice and immigration reform. The report aimed to distill key discussions, insights, and actionable steps for funders committed to dismantling mass incarceration and ending immigrant detention.

The challenge lay in transforming rich, complex content—encompassing policy insights, historical context, and movement-building strategies—into an engaging and accessible format. YDC approached this by implementing a clean, modern layout featuring strong typographic hierarchy, engaging pull quotes, and structured sections that guided readers through the key takeaways. Strategic use of color, imagery, and data visualization enhanced readability while reinforcing themes of justice and equity.

This collaboration exemplifies YDC's commitment to leveraging design for social impact, transforming complex discussions into visually compelling publications that serve as tools for advocacy and actionable change.

Challenge

The J.M. Kaplan Fund needed a report that not only documented the convening but also inspired action. The content was rich with policy insights, historical context, and movement-building strategies—yet translating these complex themes into an engaging and digestible format was crucial. The challenge was to design a report that honored the urgency and depth of the discussions while making the information clear, visually engaging, and easy to navigate for a broad audience, including funders, advocates, and policymakers.

The Solution

Our approach focused on clarity, accessibility, and impact. We implemented a clean, modern layout with strong typographic hierarchy, engaging pull quotes, and structured sections that guided the reader seamlessly through key takeaways. Strategic use of color, imagery, and data visualization enhanced readability while reinforcing the report’s themes of justice and equity. The final design ensured that the convening’s insights were not just archived but became a tool for advocacy, equipping funders and stakeholders with actionable steps to drive meaningful change.
